The Samajwadi Party government's promise of free laptops and tablets came one step closer to being realized on Friday, when the department of secondary education finalized the distributed plan for these gadgets among successful students. Coming exactly a week after the state Cabinet approved the distribution plan, the Friday's decision came with a rider. Laptops and tablets will be distributed in a district on the basis of demands put forth by its district magistrate. The first lot of laptops, in black and graphite grey, Hewlett  Packard (HP) officials said, are being imported from its manufacturing  unit in China and would then be customised at its unit in  Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.

The laptops will be distributed in five phases. In the first phase, students from government schools and colleges will be given the laptops. In the second phase, the laptops will be distributed among students of government aided institutions including Arabic and Persian madarsas that are recognised by the Madarsa Board and Sanskrit Education Board. In the third phase, the laptops will be distributed in unaided institutions. The CBSE and ICSE recognised schools and institutions will be covered in the fourth and fifth phases.

The promise made by the Samajwadi Party government to distribute tablets to 26.62 lakh students who passed Class X is unlikely to be fulfilled in the current financial year ending in March. In the last 10 months, the government has failed to find a vendor to supply the tablets. And, according to its own timeline, the selected vendor will be allowed eight months to make the supply.

As per the specifications that the government has set for tablets, these would be Android 4.0 ICS or Windows OS, with 9.7 inch diagonal display size or higher capacity LCD. The 3G-supported tablet would have 8 GB internal flash memory and support for 32 GB memory SD card. The intended applications would be e-book reading, notes taking, viewing video lectures, documents like presentations, preparations of examinations like course exams, CAT, GATE, JEE, AIEEE etc. There would be font support for Hindi and Urdu also.All We Can Say Bad Luck For 10th Student.
