Hands-On-Video: Nokia Lumia 1520 with 6-inch full-HD display & 20MP camera launched For $749

Nokia was pretty active in the last period when it comes to phone releases, starting with the splendid Lumia 925 and continuing with the camera-monster Lumia 1020. Still, one device is missing from their range – a phablet. That’s why some time ago there were some rumors about the Finnish company working on a device codenamed Bandit. Now Nokia took the wraps off its much-awaited phablet, the Nokia Lumia 1520, at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. It also launched a more affordable version, called Lumia 1320, apart from three new Asha phones (will be reporting in our next Article Stay tuned).

At first glance the Lumia 1520 is almost comically huge. If you thought the 4.5-inch display on Nokia’s previous range of Lumia devices was large, then the 1520 dwarves it in comparison. Looking at a Lumia 1020 and 1520 side-by-side is more like comparing a phone to a tablet: it’s that big. Similar to Nokia’s existing Lumia range, the Lumia 1520 includes a polycarbonate body and is colored red, yellow, black, or white. It’s only 0.34 inches thick, but I found it understandably difficult to use it with one hand mainly because it’s 3.36 inches wide and 6.4 inches tall. It feels well balanced though, and it doesn’t feel heavy at 7.37 ounces.

The Lumia 1520 is powered by 2.2 GHz quad core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800) and 2GB of Ram. The handset weighs about 209 grams and is 8.7mm thick. The clearblack IPS LCD screen is 15.24cm i.e. 6 inches supporting resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The screen is with Gorilla Glass 2 protection, with high brightness mode, 16M colors, pixel density of 368ppi and wide viewing angle.

The final star of the show is Nokia’s 20-megapixel camera on the Lumia 1520. It might not be the same 41-megapixel sensor found on the Lumia1020, but it provides optical image stabilization and the PureView zoom capabilities in a lower-resolution package. The rear camera comes with dual LED flash. Camera features are 6 lens optics, 2x high resolution zoom, optical image stabilization and full auto-focus mode. Full HD video recording at 30fps is supported. The Lumia 1520 also features a front-facing 2-megapixel HD camera. As expected, the Lumia 1520 features an onslaught of new hardware and software features, which was introduced with third Windows Phone update. It runs Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 with Lumia Black and comes with the third Live Tile column in the Start menu. It packs a 3400mAh battery, with built-in wireless charging functionality.

The Lumia 1520 packs new preloaded app like Nokia Storyteller app which integrates clicked images and recorded videos with HERE maps; a new Nokia Camera app with Pro Camera UI. The phone will come in four colour variants - Black, Red, White and Yellow. The company noted that the Nokia Lumia 1520 Black colour variant is made of recyclable materials.  The new Lumia 1520 also comes preloaded with Microsoft Office and 7GB of Skydrive cloud storage space.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 will come at $749 (excluding taxes and subsidies), which roughly translates to Rs. 46,300, and will be rolled out later this year. The company announced that the Lumia 1520 will be first available in Hong Kong, Singapore, US and European markets in Q4 2013, and will be rolled out in other markets later this year.
