A picture shared by Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres became the most retweeted photograph ever on Sunday night, racing past a record held by President Obama. The selfie shows Hollywood stars including (from left) Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, DeGeneres, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o and her brother and Angelina Jolie (with her face half obscured). DeGeneres tweeted the picture on her own account and captioned it: "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars".
"We got an email from Twitter and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history," DeGeneres said shortly after access to the social media site was disrupted due to the sharing of her star-studded picture.
Once the tweet went up, within half hour the number of retweets reached Barrack Obama’s record of 778,800 retweets. In the next half hour, it passed a million retweets, thereby making it the most retweeted tweet on the Twitter platform.
At the time of filing the story, the tweet had garnered more than 1.8 million retweets. In comparison, Obama’s tweet on November 7, 2012 has only been able to garner 781,302 retweets. The photo surpassed the record set by one taken during the 2012 US election campaign.
