As expected, Motorola has launched the Moto E in India. The company had launched the phone earlier yesterday in an exclusive partnership with Flipkart in India, and promised that it would start retailing the phone from midnight. Flipkart has also been Motorola’s exclusive retail partner the Moto G and Moto X smartphones. The e-commerce site is also offering some launch day offers, which include discounts on covers, memory cards and free eBooks.
Motorola Moto E comes with 4.3-inch display with a qHD (540x960 pixel) resolution, and 256ppi pixel density. Motorola is also touting the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen of the phone, along with its 'water-nano coating' which provides a measure of water resistance.
It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor along with Adreno 302 GPU alongside 1GB of RAM. The Moto E is a dual-SIM phone that supports Micro-SIM cards and an 'intelligent calling feature.' It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat. Connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS with GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB, FM radio and 3.5mm audio jack.
Motorola's latest budget offering comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera, it has no flash or front camera, which will disappoint many. The Moto E comes with 4GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card up to 32GB. The dual-SIM function on the Moto E comes with intelligent calling, which learns your usage and automatically selects the SIM based on the contact you are calling.
On the software front, it runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, with Motorola guaranteeing that it will be upgraded to the next version. Motorola has also added features like Moto Alert, which automatically alerts preset contacts when you leave a particular location, Instant SMS with your location for emergency situations, and an Emergency mode, which sends a call to a preset contact or sound an alarm. These new features will first be introduced on the Moto E. Customization options include removable shells in nine colors.
So What does Makes Moto E Special ?
1. Android KitKat
The Moto E is the only smartphone priced under Rs 7,000 that offers an almost pure Android 4.4.2 KitKat version. Motorola is also promising a guaranteed update to the next major Android version. This is something no other brand currently promises for smartphones priced under Rs 10,000.
No other tier one brand provides a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 1.2GHz dual-core processor under Rs 7,000. Additionally, the Moto E also has 1GB of RAM while others provide just 512MB of RAM.
3. Nano coating
Like the Moto G, the Moto E is the only smartphone at this price point that provides nano coating both inside and outside. This makes it resistant to water splashes and while Motorola doesn’t claim it is water proof, there are videos of the Moto G where it has survived after being submerged in water for 30 minutes.
While other tier one brands provide a WVGA display at best at this price point (the similarly priced Sony Xperia E provides a HVGA display), the Moto E has a qHD display which is much sharper. Even the 4.3-inch display is bigger than what other similarly priced smartphones from Samsung and Sony provide. The Moto E is also the only Android smartphone at this price to come with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The 1,980mAh battery on the Moto E is also the highest rated battery out of similarly priced smartphones from tier one brands. While we are yet to put the phone through its paces, Motorola claims it should be enough to last an entire day.
