Review: Xiaomi Redmi 1s the Rising Star of Mid-Range Segment: Too Buy or Not Too Buy ?

After we posted How to Retain your Redmi 1s in just 2 Simple Step in flipkart, today we bring you the all new review of Redmi 1s. The Experience with our Redmi 1s was Superb. In this post we will try to magnify more about the Redmi 1s as well as the Untold Story of Redmi 1s and what make its Best as well as the Worst. Find out with us……

Overall Design

The Redmi 1s looks exactly the same as the original Redmi with the same boxy and chunky form factor, it feels heavy for today’s standards and isn’t a sexy device, which can be understood as it’s position as a mid-entry level device. Rear cover is metal gray colour with matte finish.

Power button, volume rockers are on the right, micro USB port at the bottom and 3.5mm audio jack on the top. Weight with battery is 164 grams and dimensions are 69.43mm x 137.43 x 9.49mm. The loudspeaker is given near the Camera.

Display and Multimedia

The IPS touch screen is 4.7 inches supporting 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. The viewing angles are great, visible by all angles. The touch is buttery Smooth and Responsive.  There is LED notification that changes with your Mood (just Kidding) you can change it to different colour as per your Need. The LED notification light had cover so many miles from top to bottom previously in “Hongmi” it has been place beside speaker vent, now it has been moved to under home button.

There are accelerometer, proximity, light, gyro and magnetic sensors, all are there. We have no problems in doing fast typing and performing gestures; thanks to the reduced bezels, one handed operation on the phone is manageable.

The Redmi 1S houses the 1.6 GHz qualcomm snapdragon 400 MSM8228 quad core processor coupled with Adreno 305 GPU and 1Gb Ram. The Redmi 1s features the same version of MIUI as Mi3 without compromising on features despite being a lower end product, for a phone that has a mere gigabyte of RAM, you won’t believe how the phone is still able to deliver a smooth overall user experience, though transition lags and app crashes can be expected at times but we find it acceptable.

The Handset Run On Jelly Bean 4.3 OS, don’t worry kitkat update is Near. We have tried Some games Like CSR Racing, FL Commando, we have tried to play Asphalt 8 but couldn’t play due to some reason while playing these game for half-an-hour we felt the phone gets warmer but not that much that you cant hold it. While playing Asphalt 8 it will be much hotter.

Storage and Benchmarks

There is 8GB storage of which about 6.14GB is allocated as internal storage (4.12GB available). OTG is supported. There is micro SD slot that supports up to 64GB cards. Apps are installed on internal storage and there is no option to move to external storage (does v37 update is capable of Moving)

The Ram is one of the Most biggest problem  of the 1GB RAM minimum free space is 450 MB, and it will reduced as you start using the phone and install as many apps. Clean the memory as often as you can for better performance. The free RAM available could drop to as low as 120MB while surfing Internet. Benchmarks results will show you that the 1s is on par with Samsung GALAXY S3, which makes a lot of sense.
  • Quadrant Benchmark: 10468
  • Antutu Benchmark: 20489
  • Nenamark 2: 56.5
  • Multi Touch: 10

The best part Of Redmi 1s is its Sony EXMOS 8Mp camera with LED Flash that tends to take high definition picture in at any condition.  Even the picture also comes vivid in low light. I felt that LED flash is powerful that you feel its presence in a Bright Room, it will be not wrong to say its powered by Dual LED Flash. It also Has a HDR Mode for outdoor shooting and HHT Mode for low light or Night Mode Shooting. Capable of shooting great amount of detail and accurate color saturation.

It has all editing option require for the picture, so you need not to download other app. The good thing is that when you zoom out the picture it dosent seem to pixels misbehaving. Ya but when you Zoom out something a very far object while snapping the colour seem to out of Control. The Handset Can Record Video in 1080p resolution at 30fps. The good thing is that there is no Shutter lag.

However, the phone features one thing that the Mi 3 doesn’t have – Lite Mode a.k.a Senior Mode, it pretty much turns your sophisticated smartphone experience into an extremely simplified UI with huge buttons and fonts. Fortunately, there might still be one thing that users may look forward to – the Redmi 1s supports USB OTG.

Battery - There is 2050 mAh removable battery. Here is how the battery performed. Battery backup is pretty good you can expect 6 hours of continuous usage depending on the app with Wi-Fi on. The above Graph represents Normal use with Wifi on. But while playing CSR Gaming for 15 minute battery drop 12%

Other – The In-hearing speaker is loud enough as well as the Loudspeaker at the back side.  It is a dual SIM handset with 3G support. You need 2 normal SIM’s and 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth worked well. Even Hugo Barra tried to Scratch Redmi 1s, but he had no success due to Dragon tail Glass, see Hugo in Action below

Final Verdict – “You pay So less, for So Much” ill advice you to neglect the bad Rumors about redmi 1s as their aim to misguide you, so you get out of the Race and they get the easy chance to Grab it. In Normal use there is no such heating even with the Wifi on, ya but playing hardcore gaming it heat little bit that’s Normal for Every Phone and Ram is the biggest concert here but will be tweak in Next update with Kitkat and MIUI 6 coming soon. So Definitely Buy it!
The Redmi 1s is a phone that again challenges the mid-entry segment smartphone market without giving competitors a chance to match its attractive pricing, it has a future proof Snapdragon 400 quad core CPU and an amazing 8 Megapixel camera that takes great shots, all priced at an affordable price tag of Rs 5,999. Disappointment is that there is no ear-phone in the box. Any question @regarding Redmi 1s is welcome in the comment section!
