The German premium brand had today launched the Refresh BMW 1 Series sedan in China to meet the needs of Chinese customers. The new model is offered exclusively for the Chinese automotive market by the BMW Group and BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. Sadly there are currently no plans for export to other countries.

Why only for China?

According to BMW, China is their biggest market having shifted more than 500,000 cars last year. And because the Chinese have requested for something smaller and more price-affordable saloon than the 3-series, it has developed the so-called 1-series Sedan for them.

“We sold over half a million cars in China last year and this, our biggest market, continues to offer great potential. Our customers in China have been asking for a smaller model to meet their specific needs and we’ve worked hard with our colleagues here to make sure this car not only meets but exceeds those desires.” Says Dr Ian Robertson, BMW AG Manager

The 1-Series Sedan is aimed at young car buyers, or so BMW says. Based on the BMW Group’s front-wheel drive UKL platform (the Mini’s base), the 1 Series Sedan is almost 170mm shorter in length than a 3 Series.

Other features include LED head & tail lamps, a panoramic glass roof, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, a HUD, along with an infotainment system with navigation, an 8.8-inch screen and an iDrive controller.

There are three engines available, The entry-level BMW 118i gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine (shared with the Mini Cooper) that produces 136 hp and 220 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

The BMW 120i gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (from the Cooper S) that develops 192 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while the 125i gets the same engine in a different state of tune producing 231 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Both the 120i and 125i get a 8-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels as standard.
