Xiaomi Redmi Y2 Review; A slightly better attempt at a selfie-focused smartphone

The Dual Rear Camera and 16MP AI-based selfie camera are the highlights of this smartphone

Redmi Y2 Review

Xiaomi has become king of Smartphone in the budget segment in very less time thanks to its Quality Smartphone which comes higher on specs and lowers in price and Redmi Y2 is yet another Smartphone in budget segment and this time it’s the cheapest Dual-Camera Smartphone from Xiaomi.

Design & Display

Redmi Y2

As per the design Redmi Y2 comes with the metallic finish but overall the body is plastic and skips the 2.5D curved front glass. The Redmi Y2 feels lighter to hold as the device is 11gm lighter than the Redmi Note 5 Pro and weight about 179gm and the device is 8.1mm thick.

You get a 5.99-inch IPS display with 18:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels (HD+ resolution) which is a let-down for a phone like Redmi Y2 which comes with the Dual camera. Although Redmi Y2 offers good color reproduction but it lacks sharpness when you compare it to Full HD+ Resolution.

Hardware

Redmi Y2

Redmi Y2 comes with Xiaomi Most favorite Snapdragon 625 chipset and Adreno 506 GPU along with either 3GB RAM + 32GB or 4GB RAM + 64GB storage while the good part is that you get a Dedicated MicroSD card so you can have 2 Sim + Micro SD together.

It can easily play popular PUBG Game when set on low Graphic without any lag! But when you move to higher Graphics the Game start lagging and sound chopping. Although it can run your daily app easily and would save lot of battery juice.

Camera

Redmi Y2

The Dual and Selfie Camera are the Highlight of this Smartphone, It comes with a dual camera setup with a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary depth sensor as seen on Redmi Note 5 Pro but the Y2 camera is no near to it when it comes to performance. The Camera captures good details and rich colors in daylight as well as indoors.

The portrait mode with added AI is something to cheers about as it creates good bokeh effect and has great edge detection. Xiaomi says that the AI will learn and improve photo results over time on both the rear and front camera. Although I am disappointed when it comes to low light photography and decision of choosing yellow tone flash instead of Single LED White Flash as seen on Redmi Note 5 Pro, the low light pictures have a yellowish tint and visible noises (as seen in Video), the Note 5 Pro performs much better in low light.

If we talk about front Selfie camera, It has a 16MP front camera with f2.0 aperture, soft LED flash and AI capabilities. The Selfie captured from Redmi Y2 comes with sharp detail, rich color and minimal noise. Although I believe it can be much better as indoor you can see the yellowish tint in the Selfie and I believe it can be corrected by future updates. You also get a portrait mode which adds a depth effect to your selfies and it works incredibly well especially outdoors.

Performance

On the software side, Redmi Y2 is the first device to come with MIUI 9.5 based on Android 8.1 and comes with Various Features like Face Unlock and Full Gesture Support. Face unlock is easy to set up and works well but its not fast enough as seen on the RealMe 1. While Full-Screen Gesture Support! Helps to get rid of the on-screen Navigation buttons, which I truly don’t like it when its come to gaming! Full-Screen Gesture help to navigate from Home screen to apps easily.

The Redmi Y2 comes with 3080mAh battery it can easily last for a day with moderate usage while for a heavy user, it may not last that long.

Final Verdict

Xiaomi Redmi Y2

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is a slightly better attempt at a selfie-focused smartphone in the budget segment. The Dual Rear Camera and 16MP AI-based selfie camera are the highlights of this smartphone. If you are new to Selfie Smartphone then Redmi Y2 is the perfect choice with the blend of Dual Camera and Snapdragon 625 performance chipset while asking price of Rs 10,000 is bit high and Xiaomi should thing to revise it pricing to create the perfect competition in the Market with likes of RealMe 1 and upcoming Selfie-centric Smartphone.
